Therefore, I've taken it upon myself to visit as much of the world as possible, and to take more away from it than just checking off sites and taking lots of photos (although it is a nice supplement). With each venture abroad I am stepping farther outside of what I know, beginning in high school with People to People trips, followed by a student exchange in Spain. In university I participated in a human rights based trip to Guatemala and led it the following year. Next came study abroad, my first extended period outside the country, from which I have never truly returned. Because of living in (wandering around) Chile, I now struggle to imagine a life devoid of extended exploration and adventure, of settling down and following a routine, of knowing what comes next.
So I went to Indonesia to learn its traditional arts and culture via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "Indonesia Arts and Culture Scholarship". My only knowledge of the country had come from my Pencak Silat classes, which opened the door to my pursuing this scholarship. Beyond knowing (assuming) that the Indonesian government had it all covered, I went into the program without any idea what to expect.
Never anticipated this |
Despite the confines of a return ticket, it was an epic adventure, and will serve me well in creating an increasingly exciting story. Now I'm moving to DC to replenish funds and figure out the next step in getting as many people as possible out into the world.
Indeed, my main motivation for blogging about such experiences is to inspire others to explore the world as well. Few realize that they, too, can spice up their life narrative. I travel for myself, but share it in the hopes that others will follow suit.
If you like my photos, I have put some of them up for sale on RedBubble. Buying pictures helps me travel longer, giving you more posts and more adventure.
